A Croatian Treasure, Omiš
Omiš is a town and port in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, and is a municipality in the Split-Dalmatia County. The town is situated approximately 25 kilometers in the south-east of Croatia’s second largest city, Split. Its location is where the Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea.
It’s very interesting that at the meeting point of the waters, the salty and the sweet water are mixed.
It is supposed that the name of this city, Omiš, developed from the Slavic Holm, Hum as a translation from the Illyrian – Greek word Onaion, Oneon, meaning “hill”. Today, Omiš’s economy is based on farming, fishing, textile and food-processing industries and tourism.
Apart from that this town is not so big, it has a main road full of souvenir shops and restaurants, where you can taste the typical Croatian food such as black cockle and fish of the Adriatic Sea.
Besides gastronomy, there are other things to do. You can lie on the beaches of Omiš. You might choose between the two blanks. There is a sandy beach near the centre, and an other, rocky beach near the old town.
The beaches are equipped with showers, changing rooms, there are cafes and a children’s playground. It is possible to rent chaise lounges for sunbathing and umbrellas. Water entertainment on Omiš beach include water polo, beach volleyball, renting catamarans, water bikes, and boats.
The beaches of Omiš Riviera stretch from resort settlement Podstrana to the Makarska Riviera. The beaches of and Riviera are the beaches of Omiš town itself, and of the resort settlements.
There is not so many hotels in this town. However, it’s full of apartments. It’s practical for families and couples, too. In every corner of the town, there are many private apartments and villas available for rent to spend some days there.
If you are thinking about to try yourself as an adventurer, rafting is a discipline in what you must try. To down the foaming river, you need only a good will and swimming skills. If you listen to the skipper instructions on how, when and how strong pull, or when put into the boat and hold tight, you will experience the adventure that will boast a long time and you will never forget.
It’s important to avoid injury and it is necessary to listen to the guide. It is forbidden to use alcohol and / or other drugs. Helmet and life-jacket are given to you, it’s included in the price. These tours start in the morning among the mountains, end the Cetina River near the town of Omiš.

Don’t worry about swimming int he Adriatic Sea! Water is warm enough to swim in it at that time, too. Moreover, the weather is sunny and hot thanks to the Mediterranean influence.
