It’s carnival time! Carnivals are held in many different countries and cities in the world, but the most famous festivals are organized in Italy. 40 days before Easter, traditional Carnavele is the biggest festival in Winter, and often lasts for two or three weeks. Due to the huge popularity of the festivals, it is strongly recommended to book your hotel room few weeks before the Carnevale. Here are the biggest and most beautiful carnivals in Italy.
The celebration starts two weeks before the actual date of the Carnevale (in 2017, the date is 28th February). Concerts, entertainment (like best masked costume contest, best mask of the Carnival, ice skating, street shows, closing party etc.) are located throughout the city.

Carnival in Verona
The Carnival in Verona is one of the oldest festival in Italy, first was held in 1531. Due to the starvation in that time, Tommaso Da Vico (a noble in Verona) decided to organise a huge event for poor people with lots of gnocchi and wine. This was the origin of the Veronese Carnival. Today, the carnival’s last Friday is called gnocchi’s Friday, a big festival on Verona’s streets. The parade is led by “gnocchi’s dad”, who was elected a month before the carnival.

Viareggio Carnevale is one of the most well-known event and carnival in Italy. The celebration attracts more than 600,000 visitors every year. The carnival is known for its huge paper maché floats and also for its great programmmes like: masked parade ending with fireworks, travelling theatres, carnival parties in bars, hotels, restaurants with carnival menus.
